Steepest Street in the World

Canton Avenue

I dugged the article about Canton Avenue in Pittsburgh is the unofficial steepest public street in the United States and the world. This street is grade of 37% or 37 feet rise by elevation in 100 feet horizontal. I pinpoint the map of Canton Ave in Google Map.

Interesting. I went to look the Canton Ave, which is not far, just around twenty minutes drive from my home to check this out and feel like to walk up and down on the steep street. Believe it or not, I took a little out of breath as I walked to top from bottom in Canton Ave. I can feel my ankle little uncomfortable on my feet as I walk slowly back down to bottom from top!

According to Guinness Book of Records, they claim Baldwin Street, Dunedin, New Zealand is world's steepest street with grade of 38%. According town own website, it listed as 35% grade. From the source in Wikipedia:

Baldwin Street's claim to fame has caused some controversy after it emerged that the original entry in the Guinness Book of Records was based on a typographical error, claiming a maximum gradient of 1:1.266 (38° or 79%). This would be impossible to walk up, and appears to be an error for 1:2.66, which itself is slightly steeper than the currently accepted figure of 1:2.86. Alternatively, the mistake may have been caused by confusion between grade in degrees and percentage grade, i.e., mixing up 38% with 38°. Nevertheless, the Guinness Book officially recognizes Baldwin Street as the world's steepest street at a 35% grade.

Is it [Baldwin Street] inaccurate? Should Guinness go back and take the accurate measurement in New Zealand? I can see the difference in the picture: Baldwin Street is longer in length of climbing the elevation than Canton Ave.

Grand Canyon After the Storm

Fog, Clouds in Grand Canyon

Clouds and Fogs are about to fade away

Grand Canyon

An year ago, I paid off my time for my vacation to Arizona during the time my blog was absent. I thought I'm going to throw the dramatic story what I had an memorable day of my vacation in Arizona.

A day before, my friend and I arrived the hotel for two nights in Flagstaff, Arizona, about hour drive from Grand Canyon. We saw the amazing mammoth green full of pine trees in highest peak of mountain (13k feet above the sea level). We arrived to rest for a night.

Checked the weather forecast, learned that there will be cold and rain for a whole day in Grand Canyon area. I am kinda very depressed with this forecast, and decide to stick the plan.

A day in the morning, we were about to left the hotel and we cannot see Flagstaff mountain, it is covered the gray clouds. The rain came and made us feel chilly, cold and wet. Drove to Grand Canyon South Rim from Flagstaff in the rain all the way.

Touching Grand Canyon is my first experience in western national park of United States of America. As I came out to look the Grand Canyon vista, I see the zero-visibility in Grand Canyon. I am very depressed I thought myself to miss the fabulous view in Grand Canyon.

We decide to stay here for few extra hours, took bus to ride around few miles on south rim, been to visitors center, small museums and shops to keep us cozy and dry. We are under the umbrella all the time while we're outside. We discussed and decide to leave the Grand Canyon, we returned back to the bus to starting point (where we parked our automobile), we saw the first time in the day: the sunlight came out from the clouds. I am hoping to see the better visibility in Grand Canyon vista zone area. We just got out the bus, walked faster, and we came to see the most amazing vista I ever faced in my entire life.

The clouds, fogs are about to fade away slowly, we stayed few extra hours watched in full of vista and snapped lot of photos. I couldn't be happier what I witnessed.

As we left Grand Canyon on beautiful evening day, and a drove half hour before return back to Flagstaff, we saw the snow first time on highest peak of mountain in Arizona!

Witness the first snow of fall/winter season

What a downside and upside. A. best. afternoon. vacation. day. I. ever. seen.

Hot Air Balloon Journey

Google My Maps Balloon Path
My Flickr Pictures in Yahoo Maps
Have you ever gone up in a hot air balloon ride? It was my once lifetime experience to take on hot air balloon ride, slowly watch the Western Pennsylvania landscape drift by.

I captured dozens of pictures and video clips, uploaded those into my Flickr and YouTube account. Also, I created the Google Map mashups where hot air balloon path took the place from start to end. And lastly, you can look my Flickr Maps spot where the picture took its place. Those are nice oppurinty to share with you for the experience in hot air balloon ride.

8 minutes, 24 seconds long video clip (as seen above) including my presentation and an adventure. For only viewing in hot air balloon adventure (appx. 5 minutes long), click here.

What's next for my journey? I am thinking of skydiving... it is exact opposite from hot air balloon ride (low vs high, slow vs fast, relax vs thrill) as what you might think.

Pittsburgh Vista

I took my Canon PowerShot S2 IS to capture the video while traveling in full of forest from I-279 North through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and suddenly Pittsbugh spreads out in front of you like into another world in full of city atmosphere and water.

It is wonderful vista experience, even more fantastic while driving in night time!
