Deaf Faceroll

Inspired in Joi Ito’s Random Faceroll, this is the nice way to connect the people’s blogs to get noticed. I also found the site, BlogFaces.com, add your picture that link to your blog. I couldn’t find any deaf blog faces in this BlogFaces.com, so I decided to make my own project: to have a picture of his/her face who is Deaf and have a blog.

I call this: Deaf Faceroll.

I have spent some of my time collecting one of my selections of deaf blogs, capture their face into blogs, asked some Deafies for the permission to take photo that doesn’t have in their blog. I established MySQL database to insert my selections of deaf blogs, wrote simple PHP code to random six deaf faceroll in my blog here, I called this module: Random Deafroll.

You can view one of my project for Deaf blogrolls I collected. If you have blog and a picture of yourself and you would like to add this in my Deaf Faceroll project, ping me here.

UPDATE (1/22/200711:00pm EST): In same day after I posted this entry, I found the cool site - Tino is showcasing the A-B-C List of two-thousand Faces of the Blogosphere.

My Project: WPSD Alumni Vlog

On Thursday March 1, 2007, our officers of Alumni Association of Western Penn. School for the Deaf (WPSD) hosted the event, Volleyball game: Alumni women vs WPSD girls and Basketball game: Alumni Men vs WPSD boys. During past two years, I took photos of Men's and Women's Alumni games; and I am getting little tired of this. I was so busy chatting my old folks, and having little hard time to have motivation and focus to take the pictures.

I decide to do something different to experiment. I can shot the vlog video clips with my cheap Canon PowerShot S2 IS digital camera throughout WPSD alumni event. The hilarious part is several people thought my camera is only for taking the pictures, but actually, I am recording them for video clip and they didn't except that they are on video through Internet!

Fun facts I produce the video: Total 950 MB of over 110 raw file of video clips. 30 frames per second with 320x240 resolution. Edited all raw files compressed into one 200 MB master video file, took me almost 4 hours to finish. Two gigabytes of total files including project file, raw and final video clip. Burned into DVD for storage after successful uploading the final clip to Google Video. I realized of doing vlogs is fun to make, but my biggest challenge: timing is my enemy.

12 minutes of video clip shown below.... be prepared of your time to watch this video! Any one of you recognize the faces in the vlog video clip?

I remember Tayler mentioned that Vlogs can be shot even while on vacation. Even, Vlogs can do on special events too! There are unlimited possibilities to shot the vlog anyplace, anytime!

Pittsburgh Deaf clubhouse website

PAD website: Then and Now

I have been wandering around Pittsburgh Association of the Deaf (PAD) private clubhouse few times each month in ten years to social the Deaf culture in old way.

An year ago, I joined to become active member moving up a level from associate member (according to PAD Bylaws, paid annual membership club for attending the clubhouse in few years), which I can have to attend the meetings at deaf clubhouse once a month, have a right to voice, vote and hold office, and are those who have been elected. Some of PAD active members knew me that I am the only deaf web developer (not always) in southwestern of Pennsylvania. They begged me to build the better PAD web site. I was told: 'Wait and See.'

The PAD website was established in June 2001 by David Tajc (can't recall the name of person if he designed the website), with information of PAD and updates occasionally. Personally, I can see this page style is dull and gloomy with full black on background and gray (or dim pink?) in some layout; the webmaster manually modify or add information on web files, upload from his local computer to the web hosting provider.

Back to my words, Why am I saying, 'Wait and see'? The reason is I HATE to see myself and the only time to spend my responsibility by updating the information same over and over again in length of my time. Been through with this, and done that.

I have been thinking in some way that there is something I want to do: Renovated PAD website. Less work and responsibility. Ease to use. Save time. Motivated. And, the most important what I am forwarding to be: Happy.

I have researched (not for very long) the better way to fit my goal dream. I chose publishing web application platform, WordPress, which I can allow our active members to manage, control and publish the information in PAD website by only simple web user interface. I trained few of the active members who are familiar with basic web terminology, to get a taste with WordPress.

The second version of PAD website launched on September 29, 2007.

Two of the awesome features for plugins (special function add-ons) in WordPress are FAlbum (aka Flickr Album) and Event Calendar. Plugging FAlbum in WordPress to feed Flickr photos directly into PAD web site to browse PAD event photos. Event Calendar display the upcoming events in a dynamic calendar, to click highlighted box of the calendar day to view the listings of the event detail information in a page, exclusively on PAD web site.

Couldn't this get any better to make my day?

Photos to the Rescue

Color fade comparison

This photo describe my deceased grandmother holding me as three-month-old infant.

From left photo is 30-year-old original color photography with faded color over the time today. On the right scanned photo is fixed, modified color fade format to bring this into digitalized format.

The color film photography materials are not permanent and can be destroyed by improper storage and enclosures such as high temperature and high relative humidity, air pollution and dirt. This could become more difficult to take care of this in a long run.

Digital photography is big advantage. Having a permanent storage on digital media is cheaper, and easy to take care of. Once all of the digitalized photos are sealed, burn those into disc storage format such as DVD, make extra back-up copies and save them into different safe locations.

This is my big and long project is to scan all of my family albums to take good care of this to make my mommy and daddy happy. I had my emotion hit hard during my own time while scanning the photos of my ages through the time. At least, sometimes I enjoy, sometimes I do not, if I'm not [me] in the picture.

I am still not finished this project yet. Approximately 1,000 photos more to go. I always can be a patient.
