NTID Job Fair Recap

Mellon Information Session
I have been into Rochester for two days with Mellon employers for our session, workshop, and job fair at NTID / RIT. What a day!

I met several old friends, roommates and staff advisors, they were kind of unexpectable and surprised to see me at NTID Job Fair as Mellon full-time employee and ambassador. I am being impress the NTID / RIT students for pursing their job career after they finish with college at NTID / RIT.

Democrat & Chronicle, a Rochester newspaper - the staff writer chose and interviewed me for my experience with communication barriers at my work.

During this event, I don't have enough my own spend time with friends but I did sneak another building for very short time - to take a look new renovated Dining Commons cafeteria, and yet still under construction for building the inter-connect between NTID / LBJ building which will be completed in 2006/2007. I have forgotten to take the picture for this. Dang!

I took some of few pictures from last two day of events and posted in my Flickr.

I am hoping I will be coming there again next year for more fun.

I would like thank RIT for completion of Bachelor of Science study in Information Technology, which I learned most of the web technologies.   RIT really changed my life and their education since I attended in winter quarter of 1999.   I remember I only know HTML and JavaScript after received associate degree of Computer Information Sciences at Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, PA.

Four and half years later, I have learned a lot amount of education at RIT, I learned: XHTML, DHTML, CSS, Java, Lingo (Director), ActionScript (Flash), Shell, Perl, CGI, PHP, XML, SVG, SOAP and SQL. Also I earned three blocks (ten-week) of cooperative education to gain my work experience.

Now, it's about time to tough start a new life: Find a career job, Have a live my own and responsible.

Is IT Real?

I am reading a new designed web page, RIT Information Technology. It says: "RIT became the first university in North America to offer a complete degree program in information technology."   Is it real?   I think I do believe their words.

I graduated in RIT Information Technology in February 2004.   I was in RIT for last four years, this department had expanded with new concentration areas & class courses, new faces of instructors, new building, and it changes the people's everyday life.

I do love IT.   My concentration is Web Site Development, and it puts me into my heart, and I am still doing as my hobby today.   Everyday, I have seen more and more new technologies and their vocabulary related to Internet networking and programming, which cannot be found in dictionary (such as Webster), so instead you can find these only in Webopedia.

I am now currently learning ASP.NET programming at community college class near my hometown, and I am self-learning PHP and MySQL for my next big freelance project.   I am still struggling to find the career job, because of me, deafness.   Don't feel sorry for me, I'm not the only one like my friend, Justin.

By the anyway, here is my final comment: IT is real.

I Graduated... Really!

I got letter from RIT today and the letter says:

Dear David,

I am pleased to inform you that you have successfully completed all requirements for RIT’s Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.   The diploma will be forwarded to you sometime in the very near future.   My congratulations on your achievements at the Rochester Institute of Technology. My warmest wishes to you for a bright and successful career.

Sincerely,
Undergraduate Program Coordinator
Department of Information Technology

I am now officially graduated RIT in February 2004.   In the case you didn’t know: I attend the commencement in May 2003, because after leaving at RIT, I have two course requirements to complete my bachelor’s degree: internships and one class, Senior Seminar.   I waived my internship last October, and passed Senior Seminar in February recently.   Now, I can’t wait to see and touch the official Bachelor of Science in Information Technology diploma coming in the mailbox at my house in next month or two.

To be honest with you, I already miss RIT community...

New Look of IT web

I have seen the old Information Technology web site for four years of my major at RIT (1999-2003).

Today, the new IT web site is in.   Amazing, did you see the picture of woman on top and middle? Her name is Heather Smith, profoundly deaf and IT Class of 2001.   I met and chatted with her few times during my internship at National Technical Institute for the Deaf in spring 2003 and she is amazing IT woman who knows much about concept of the web work.   You deserve it, Heather Smith!

Valuable Experience

Since three months of my full-time career jobless, I am looking for the full-time web-developer fields around small and larger companies, and I find more frustrating myself to find the job field and requirement which fits my needs.   Many job fields require having the web developer include the database experience such as SQL, ASP and ASP.NET.   I have little or none of these.

I need to have experience the web database to gain my valuable knowledge, so I found the classes relating to web database system and e-commerce applications at Community College of Allegheny Country, which could raise me the opportunity to find the general job fields of web developer & designer, application programmer, programmer analyst and web database system.

Should I go Graduate School?

I received a letter from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) about NTID Professional Fellowship Program (PFP). The motto says: I could get master’s degree and the tuition is free! The letter says:

The NTID PFP offers you:
  • a full tuition waiver
  • an annual stipend of up to $15,000 as wages for part-time employment (job-related training in positions such as teaching assistant, tutor, laboratory assistant, program analyst, web designer, systems programmer and more)
  • free housing in one of the residence halls on campus if you agree to participate as a role model in student life programs
You must meet the following basic requirements:
  • Be U.S. citizen CHECK
  • Have a 70 decibel or greater hearing loss in the better ear, unaided CHECK
  • Have received a bachelors degree from an accredited postsecondary institution CHECK
  • Be accepted into a master’s degree program at Rochester Institute of Technology
I showed this letter to my dad and he said this sounds great, which I can take advantage to take graduate school at RIT. I would give a try if RIT accept the master’s degree for Information Technology…

Should I go graduate school or not?  To be continued!
