As of 2006, PC World labeled America Online (AOL) ranked number one as worst technology product of all time.
It's anybody guess that the most popular online service provider for Deaf to subscribe: AOL. It was due that online service for Deaf people who are unfamiliar with computer and networking in 1990s and early 2000s, AOL succeeds targeting them by using fierce marketing techniques through the years.
Several Deafies signed up to be AOL member, with their screen names to use addictive Buddy List (one-on-one instant messaging technology) connecting more and more Deaf folks across USA for easier access the chat over Internet. Like the hearing folks to communicate the voice over phones is to Deaf folks uses AIM to communication the text over computer.
I hate AOL but I do like AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) application software. It was due that AIM is free and very easy to sign and usability. More and more friends use AIM motivate me more, I am sticking AIM to stay in touch with my buddies such as my friends and family since ten years - 1996.
When I heard someone saying, "I have AOL" and I would hit back: "AOL sucks!"

del.icio.us
You can use AIM without getting an AOL account; there's a way to sign up for just the messenger part. Plus, Yahoo, gmail, and a couple of other services also offer free instant messaging. I use them all, and use the free software from sourceforge called GAIM that actually understands all these protocols with one program. So you can ditch the AOL account but keep the AIM goodness :-)
(I wandered over here after reading about the deaf faces you put up recently.)
