Bad Columbus Day?

Today is my day off from work at Mellon Financial Corporation, because of holiday – observed of Columbus Day; most banks are almost always closed on this day, as are government offices. Public schools are not.

The official date for Columbus Day holiday is October 12th, the same day I born.

My friend commented me: do we need to get rid of Columbus Day? According to history, Indians discover America first. Vikings saw America way before Columbus. Columbus didn’t discover America but he found the New World here in 1492, and shouted back to Old World. Under influence of Columbus, the Europeans sailed and moved to America to build a new life – colony and act of genocide against Native Americans and pushed them away in America; bought new diseases (chicken pox, measles) against which Native Americans had no immunity.

Some people thinks Columbus Day is insult holiday in America. According to Wikipedia:

Some activists within the United States, particularly Native Americans, find the holiday offensive because they object to honoring a person who they see as opening the door to European colonization, the exploitation of native peoples and the slave trade. This has caused a persistent controversy between Native Americans and Italian-Americans. In response to this controversy, some communities, such as Berkeley, California have renamed the holiday to "Indigenous Peoples Day".
Well, are you proud to be Columbus Day in American holiday?
